This £38m maintenance, repair, and overhaul hanger, with support space and offices, is designed to house up to 13 aircraft in 225,000 sq. ft of space.
Tate Consulting provided full M&E design and sprinkler services. A particular challenge was correlating the fully-automatic 12m-high fully-openable doors with an effective heating system – the doors can be open for a considerable time. This was overcome using a radiant panel system.
The building also has a number of specialist design items including: sprinkler AFFF (aqueous film forming foam) foam installation, providing a high-level deluge system, design standards to CAA (Civil Aviation Authority), and NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), recessed automatic rise/lower utility pits at a cost of £650,000, overhead cranes and compressed air.
